ABOUT HEALTHY PLYMOUTH AND TERRA CURA INC.
Healthy Plymouth is a collaboration between the Town of Plymouth, Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital - Plymouth, Plymouth Public Schools, Terra Cura Inc., and many other committed community partners. We are a volunteer organization made up of people who want to make a difference in the lives of Plymouth youth. Our goal is to create free, engaging programming for middle school and high school youth in Plymouth as a drug prevention strategy. Our community, as well as many other surrounding communities, has been seriously affected by the rise in drug use and drug related deaths in recent years. With the community’s help, we can move one step closer to prevention by engaging local youth in meaningful out of school activities, promoting healthy living, and building on this engagement to reduce isolation and increase a sense of belonging and community.
The Ground Up Tomato Sauce Initiative puts into action Healthy Plymouth’s partnership with the non-profit Terra Cura Inc. to utilize recently constructed and existing garden beds throughout Plymouth schools and the larger community. Hands-on gardening programs will be created that will allow our youth to plant, care for, and harvest the produce from these gardens. The two kinds of tomatoes to be harvested will be used to make tomato sauce for a district-wide school lunch. These gardens present an opportunity for local youth to reconnect with nature and learn about connections to their food system. Healthy Plymouth’s Amazing Race, “Racing towards Prevention from the Ground Up” will fund this garden program and more for local Plymouth youth!
