A campaign by Billy Reilly

10th Annual P4P Ride in Norwell, MA on Sept 18, 2016
September 19, 2016 Update and Thank You!

Hi Everyone,

What can one say when a simple Thank You doesn't feel like enough?

Thank you all for making yesterday, and the past ten years, such an incredibly memorable experience. Your willingness to embrace P4P has been both humbling and eye opening, and something for which I'll always be grateful.

Thanks to you we have raised nearly $500K for neonatal intensive care at Brigham and Women's and Boston Children's Hospital!

Yesterday embodied everything I have loved about this ride from day one -- the camaraderie, the support, the laughter, everyone's desire to enjoy the day and work together. P4P truly couldn't have taken its shape and succeeded were it not for your involvement and support.

Ever grateful,

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Pedaling 4 Preemies (P4P) was started as a ride of gratitude to say "thank you" to the incredible doctors and nurses at Brigham and Women's and Boston Children's Hospital who saved our son, Will's, life. He was born 13 weeks premature at 1 lb 9 oz.

While my family and I will always feel a debt of gratitude to the team of more than 50 doctors and nurses who tended to Will during his 95 days at the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) --- he is just one of their many success stories. There are countless other families and infants from around the world who benefit from their expertise and care.

Pedaling 4 Preemies (P4P) began in 2007 by Billy and Alexis Reilly in an effort to show support to the hospitals that helped them to bring their son, Will, home. The P4P ride has raised nearly $450,000 for two of the largest NICU’s (Neonatal Intensive Care Units) in Boston, Brigham and Women’s and Children’s Hospitals.

It all started when Alexis, at 26 weeks pregnant, started having pain in her abdomen. She came to Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), and after several hours of tests, Alexis was diagnosed with HELLP Syndrome, which stands for hemolytic anemia, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelet count. It is extremely serious, and the only way to treat it is to deliver the baby. An emergency C-section was scheduled and Will arrived at 5:35pm that evening, weighing only 1lb, 9oz.

For the first month, the BWH nurses called Will the “all-star of the NICU” because he was doing so well. But when it came time to start feeding him milk, they realized little Will had digestive problems. That’s when he got really sick. Will was transported to Children’s Hospital and immediately went into surgery.

Will came out of surgery with an ostomy so he could eliminate waste. The surgeons said, “The good news is, we can’t find anything wrong. The bad news is, we can’t find anything wrong.” After eight days, Will suddenly turned a corner. He was taken off the ventilator, was feeding great, and getting stronger. At Children’s, they said, “Normally, we would just keep Will until he is ready to go home, but the Brigham nurses are fighting very hard to have him back.” He went back to Brigham and Women’s Hospital for his final month of treatment.

After 95 days, Will was finally able to go home at 4lbs., 12 oz., so tiny, so wonderful and most of all healthy!

Now Will is a thriving, happy and healthy 9 year old --- thanks in no small part to the more than 50 doctors and nurses who cared for him during his first 95 days of life.
